So, what do these public speaking coaches teach to overcome public speaking anxiety? In order to convert hearers into listeners, you have to know why they really should listen to you ? and tell them if essential. You do not have to more than dramatize.

I was also able to listen towards the tone of my voice, see where I did or didn?t place pauses and hear the intonation and emphasis in my speak. Or rather self-effacing humor. Then, it occurred.

ASUS Padfone hands-on (video)

We're here at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and ASUS just formally unveiled the shape-shifting Padfone -- just like it said it would. Even more than raw specs, what makes the phone striking are its accompanying accessories. Sure, you could use it as a standalone 4.3-inch handset, but it will also be sold with a so-called station that effectively turns it into a 10-inch tablet -- not unlike how you can slip certain Moto handsets inside the company's netbook-like Lapdocks. It will also be sold with an optional keyboard dock (just like the Prime) and -- get this -- a stylus that doubles as a receiver for when you receive phone calls. We elbowed our way to the front of a pack of voracious tech journalists, and stole a few minutes of hands-on time with both the handset and its various accoutrements. Join us past the break for some early impressions and a duo of videos.

Celebrate Good Times, Come On! ? scillagrace

Today is my darling baby?s 21st birthday, which in the good ole U. S. of A. means that she can legally purchase and/or be served an alcoholic drink.?? Whoo-hoo!? This becomes quite the rite of passage for many people.? It used to be that different states had different legal drinking ages.? Back in the 70s, Illinois had it at 21 and Wisconsin had it at 18, so lots of kids would drive over the border to drink and then drive home drunk.? Not something a mother wants to think about for too long.? In my family of origin, though, drinking was done at home.? The first (and only!) time I got sick from sampling alcohol, I was 10 years old.? My mother made a Greek dinner and my father let me taste Ouzo, retsina, and Metaxa.? I learned how much is too much pretty early.? I also learned that I could get much better alcohol at home than I could at a party with my peers.?? For me, it is all about taste.? My father once educated my children at the dinner table by explaining how alcohol is a solvent that releases fragrance and enhances the taste of food.? What is the primary liquid in fine perfumes?? Alcohol.? The pairing of food and drink is a scientific discovery of pleasure.? Coming from my dad, that seemed to be the ?right? approach, and I think it has served pretty well.? My kids grew up having tastes in increased measures and never became binge drinkers.? My baby had her first taste when she was baptized at two months old.? The priest dipped his finger in the communion wine and let her suck on it.? She was a full-fledged member from that day on.? Why not?

When I turned 21, I was engaged to be married.? My fiance took me out for a champagne brunch after church.? All through my 20s, I was having babies.? I never went to bars and hardly drank at all.? I have no cultural experience of ?the bar scene?, and that amuses Steve no end these days.? I also missed all of the pop music scene from the 80s on.? I am a walking anachronism, it seems.? Oh, well.? I still think I know how to have fun.? I do drink and dance and sing?mostly with family.? Tonight, my kids are going out together to do Broadway karaoke at a gay bar.? Now, I could fit right in with that!? I worked for a children?s musical theater company for 7 years, and my kids were all involved.? We rock the Broadway tunes!? Sadly, though, Mom is not invited.? Not this time, but I hope in the near future.

And now, for the photo journal portion.? My family album reveals ?Celebrations, Then & Now?:

It starts with my family of origin. My mom at the piano after serving us a gourmet meal and wine. This was typical. Pictured: my sisters, brother, and a niece. (photo: DKK)

Next: Me & Jim at a church talent show. Yes, a couple of hams with a couple of drinks in them, singing and dancing.

?

So, then what happens? We raise a bunch of talented kids who like to perform and dress up and drink like pirates!

See? It's a theme.

So then my baby gets the bug really bad, and she's really good! (and I can't get this to print any bigger, sorry!)

And she's absolutely fabulous and happy onstage!

And I am incredibly proud of her!

?

And sometimes, we get to play dress up and sing and dance together!

And now, she?s all growed up! (*sniff*)? You are fabulous, Miss Em!? Go rock the scene tonight, celebrate your life, your health, your talent, your livelihood, your friends & family, and the fact that you are here and surrounded by love!!? And I know you won?t forget, that love extends beyond visible boundaries.

Your daddy adores you!

And he now celebrates the remarkable lady you've become with a bigger smile than he could muster with his physical form!

?

I am beginning my 50th year of life. I like to write and take pictures. My sister did a really cool project the year she was turning 50, so once again, I'm following in her footsteps. My life has changed dramatically in the last 5 years, and I have changed with it. My husband died, my kids moved out, I sold our home and moved in with a tall, dark Scorpio. I suppose I have a lot to process, and I'm sure there will be more.

Travel Kit - Obligation traveling crowds out leisure trips, study finds

By Michelle Baran, Budget Travel

Weddings, reunions, graduations, new babies, business trips ? are you taking fewer leisure vacations because of the time and money you devote to obligation travel?

According to a recent survey commissioned by?Hotwire.com, 41 percent of traveling U.S. adults spend the majority of their vacation budget on obligation travel. And 89 percent of respondents said they would take more leisure trips if they had the time and the money to do so.

For its American Travel Behavior Survey, Hotwire commissioned Harris Interactive to conduct an online survey of 2,127 U.S. adults from July 27-29, 2011.

According to the survey, 94 percent of respondents said that they would take one more trip than they already had planned if they could afford it.

The solution, suggests Hotwire, is combining the obligation travel with leisure time. Work sending you to a conference in Orlando? Bring the spouse and kids so they can enjoy some time at the local theme parks.

Family reunion back home? Try to tack on a weekend getaway for some time away from everything ? and everyone.?

Live Poll

Do you mix business with pleasure when traveling?

?

But there are advantages and disadvantages to this approach. If it's a personal trip, a family event or gathering, travelers still have to find the time and money to get there, and any extra time spent away is just that, more time and money.

That said, if you're already paying for a flight somewhere, it might be more economical to just add on some extra time rather than book an entirely separate flight and vacation elsewhere.

If there is a business trip element, there are potential savings to be had on at least one person's transportation costs and possibly the accommodations, depending on the business trip. But then, the person working might be unavailable for part or all of the trip.

Georgia Spa Shooting: 5 Dead In Apparent Murder-Suicide In Suburban Atlanta

??He told CNN, ?I?m a person of faith. I believe in good in evil. If somehow or another because you?re a person of faith and you believe in good and evil is a disqualifier for president, we?re going to have a very small pool of candidates who can run for president,? which I think is a pretty good answer,? Limbaugh said, according to a transcript of his show.

The conservative radio host charged, ?Do you think Santorum is a threat to your religious liberty? If you do, you are wrong. Barack Obama has already shown that he is a threat to religious liberty. He has already indicated he doesn?t believe in it.?

Limbaugh also cautioned that if the Democratic establishment chooses to treat the discussion of good an evil as ?something odd,? they would only find themselves ?so out of touch with the vast majority of Americans.?

The comments Santorum made at Ave Maria University in Florida years ago went viral after the speech headlined the Drudge Report.

?This is a spiritual war. And the Father of Lies has his sights on what you would think the Father of Lies would have his sights on: a good, decent, powerful, influential country ? the United States of America. If you were Satan, who would you attack in this day and age,? the GOP hopeful said in the summer of 2008. ?He attacks all of us and he attacks all of our institutions.?

Limbaugh took to the airwaves soon after, saying that Santorum will ?have to have an answer for these things when queried.?

Santorum was indeed asked about the remarks Tuesday, and responded by calling the question ?a joke? and ?absurd. Limbaugh said Wednesday that this reaction was ?exactly right.?

?In a political sense, the Democrats or the regime here, if you?re going to try to make an issue out of this good and evil business, you?re going to be in the minority,? he said, noting that the vast majority of Americans believe in the concept of good and evil.

Rare Earth element found far, far away

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

Nearly 13.7 billion years ago, the universe was made of only hydrogen, helium and traces of lithium ? byproducts of the Big Bang. Some 300 million years later, the very first stars emerged, creating additional chemical elements throughout the universe. Since then, giant stellar explosions, or supernovas, have given rise to carbon, oxygen, iron and the rest of the 94 naturally occurring elements of the periodic table.

Today, stars and planetary bodies bear traces of these elements, having formed from the gas enriched by these supernovas over time. For the past 50 years, scientists have been analyzing stars of various ages, looking to chart the evolution of chemical elements in the universe and to identify the astrophysical phenomena that created them.

Now a team of researchers from institutions including MIT has detected the element tellurium for the first time in three ancient stars. The researchers found traces of this brittle, semiconducting element ? which is very rare on Earth ? in stars that are nearly 12 billion years old. The finding supports the theory that tellurium, along with even heavier elements in the periodic table, likely originated from a very rare type of supernova during a rapid process of nuclear fusion. The researchers published their findings online in Astrophysical Journal Letters.

"We want to understand the evolution of tellurium ? and by extension any other element ? from the Big Bang to today," says Anna Frebel, an assistant professor of astrophysics at MIT and a co-author on the paper. "Here on Earth, everything's made from carbon and various other elements, and we want to understand how tellurium on Earth came about."

'In the halo of the Milky Way,' a rare element found

The team analyzed the chemical composition of three bright stars located a few thousand light-years away, "in the halo of the Milky Way," Frebel says. The researchers looked at data obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope's spectrograph, an instrument that splits light from a star into a spectrum of wavelengths. If an element is present in a star, the atoms of that element absorb starlight at specific wavelengths; scientists can observe this absorption as dips in the spectrograph's data.

Frebel and her colleagues detected dips in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum ? at a wavelength that matched tellurium's natural light absorption ? providing evidence that the rare Earth element does indeed exist in space, and was likely created more than 12 billion years ago, at the time when all three stars formed.

The researchers also compared the abundance of tellurium to that of other heavy elements such as barium and strontium, finding that the ratio of elements was the same in all three stars. Frebel says the matching ratios support a theory of chemical-element synthesis: namely, that a rare type of supernova may have created the heavier elements in the bottom half of the periodic table, including tellurium.

No ordinary supernova

According to theoretical predictions, elements heavier than iron may have formed as part of the collapsing core of a supernova, when atomic nuclei collided with huge amounts of neutrons in a nuclear fusion process. For 50 years, astronomers and nuclear physicists have modeled this rapid process, named the r-process, in order to unravel the cosmic history of the elements.

Frebel's team found that the ratios of heavy elements observed in the three stars matched the ratios predicted by these theoretical models. The findings, she says, confirm the theory that heavier elements likely formed from a rare, extremely rapid supernova.

"You can make iron and nickel in any ordinary supernova, anywhere in the universe," Frebel says. "But these heavy elements seem to only be made in specialized supernovas. Adding more elements to the observed elemental patterns will help us understand the astrophysical and environmental conditions needed for this process to operate."

Frebel is continuing the search for heavy elements in space. For example, selenium ? which is similar to tellurium ? has yet to be detected in the universe. Tin, Frebel says, is also a difficult element to spot, as are many elements along the same row as tellurium in the periodic table.

"There are still quite a few holes," Frebel says. "Every now and then, we can add an element, and it adds another data point that makes our work easier."

New morning: Albert Pujols joins Angels in camp

(AP) ? Albert Pujols has arrived to begin his first spring training with the Los Angeles Angels.

Just as the sun was illuminating the Angels' facility, Pujols pulled his black Mercedes into the players' lot. Clutching a bag with some of his belongings, the three-time NL MVP headed to the clubhouse to meet his new teammates. The slugger's first stop was the equipment room, where he was introduced to several employees and clubhouse attendants.

Pujols left the St. Louis Cardinals after 11 seasons in December for a roughly $250 million contract with the Angels. He is scheduled to take infield and batting practice before holding a news conference at a hotel to discuss the next phase of his illustrious career.

Waterproof Paint, Plastic Vapor Barrier, Or Concrete Sealer?

What To Use To Control Moisture & Humidity In Your Basement

Generally speaking, homeowners now recognize the importance of creating a vapor barrier on their walls. Whether through waterproof paint, a plastic vapor barrier, a penetrating sealer, or some other method, creating this barrier will prevent water vapor from seeping through the pores of concrete.

In a finished basement, a vapor barrier will protect drywall and insulation from the moisture buildup that would otherwise lead to mold, mildew, and humidity passing through the concrete walls and floors located within the space. In an unfinished basement or cellar, sealing the walls and floor will create a drier environment, protecting stored items from rot and mold, and helping to control that musty smell that's notoriously present in below-grade spaces.

However, there are a lot of basements out there - and a lot of companies competing to earn your consumer dollar on products that will help to control that moisture intrusion.

And, like all things in the home improvement industry, some work better than others.

Let's take a look at the three most common methods of moisture control:

1. Waterproof Paint

Most popular among do-it-yourselfers, many homeowners will opt for waterproof coatings and paints that are available at most local box stores. These products sport big promises, low cost, and seductive warranties that make them look like they're a foolproof choice for any basement.

Unfortunately, these products have three major weaknesses:

* A Non-Penetrating Formula: These paints and coatings are surface-level only, and have a comparatively weak bond on your concrete surfaces.

If this coating is used on surfaces that are dirty, the will peel off. They are also a weak choice for high-traffic areas of floor, where the surface coating can peel off.

* Poor Resistance To Acidity: There's a lot of chemistry going on in the concrete walls of a basement - and the moisture that passes through may be highly acidic. This is particularly true if your basement walls are new, and haven't completed the years-long curing process. This acidity can break the bonds of surface coatings, causing them to blister and peel off.

* Vulnerability To Efflorescence Buildup: Along with moisture, minerals also pass through your basement walls. As the moisture evaporates or recedes, it can leave these minerals in the form of a white, powdery mineral salt known as efflorescence. As this builds up, it can also compromise the bond of paints and coatings. Read your warranty carefully, and you'll see that it probably doesn't cover walls with efflorescence!

To make matters worse, once these coatings fail, they can be extremely troublesome to remove. You'll be working quite hard on those ugly, blistering, peeling walls - and most likely, you'll be renting some equipment as well!

2. Plastic Vapor Barriers

Whether rigid or pliable, plastic vapor barriers are a good choice for preventing moisture that comes through basement walls. Because they attach mechanically to the walls, there is no concern of peeling or detaching from the walls as there is with waterproof paint. Additionally, this is the only solution that can also intercept water flooding through cracks in the concrete - ones that would otherwise bypass sealers and paint coatings. This flooding water would be directed to a perimeter drain system, presuming you have one in place.

Typically, the seal is made permanent with epoxy or caulk along the top and seams.

Plastic vapor barriers install fairly quickly, and there's no VOC's or drying time to worry about. They can give a basement a brighter, more cheerful appearance, or they can be used behind finished walls.

There are three disadvantages to plastic vapor barriers

* Cost: The cost to buy, cut, and attach plastic vapor barriers can be much higher than simply applying a concrete sealer or waterproof paint.

* Mold Concerns: What happens to the moisture that collects behind this plastic vapor barrier? Many homeowners voice concerns of mold and mildew growth, although there is little scientific evidence to support a health issue of mold behind a sealed vapor barrier.

* Not Ideal For Floors: While this is a great option for the walls, it's a less-than-impressive option for the floors. On a very flat floor, plastic floor tiles (without chipboard present) can be a possible vapor barrier substitute, but these tend to click and make noise on less even surfaces.

Despite the disadvantages, these vapor barriers provide a permanent solution, where applicable, and could be considered for moisture control in many homes.

3. Concrete Sealers

For the purpose of this article, we'll discuss sliane-based concrete sealers. These sealers penetrate deep into the pores of the concrete, activating with the minerals in the concrete to create a glasslike barrier deep within the concrete. They're safe to use indoors, and contain little or no VOC's (brand depending).

Sliane-based concrete sealers activate quickly, and can be applied to both cured and newly-placed concrete. They will not change the appearance of the concrete, efflorescence and acidity will not harm them, and they're able to be painted over with ease. Installation is fast (done with a brush, roller, or sprayer), and they're middle-of-the-road in overall cost.

Three disadvantages to consider are as follows:

* Provides Moisture Control ONLY: Unlike plastic vapor barriers, this will not be able to breach cracks or stop flooding water. It's meant only as a sealer for water vapor that would otherwise pass through the pores of the concrete.

* Take Care When Installing: Sliane-based sealers cause etching on glass, should they come in contact with it. When installing, be sure to protect and/or avoid glass surfaces.

* Possible to Overapply: Waterproof paints can be coated thickly, thinly, or in multiple layers, and it's impossible to overapply a plastic barrier. But an installer should be careful to only use enough sliane-based sealer to damp the concrete, as too much will leave a white residue behind.

Sliane-based sealers are the ideal choice for basements that are damp but do not flood, as they are inexpensive, install quickly and subtly, and provide a lasting solution.

This artistic creation form developed and enhanced in 16th and seventeenth century in European countries while a need increased for small mementos of spouses and children or deceased family members that could be transported when travelling a lot as we take a photogaph of our partner or family members in our wallets today. Portrait miniatures played an important role in the individual relationships of the upper middle-class and the aristocracy of the moment; they were expressions of closeness or love. In that regard they were similar to grieving brooches containing plaited locks of the hair of the ?dearly departed? that as well became common in Victorian times.

Previous to the 18th century, portrait miniatures were painted in an assortment of media: oil, watercolour or sometimes enamel ? but water-colour nonetheless predominated. They were being as well painted variously on vellum, chicken-skin or card board, and even on copper. During the eighteenth century, however, water-color on ivory became the normal method, and this continued until the miniature was gradually replaced by daguerreotypes and photography about the end of the 19th century. The zenith of the popularity of miniature portraits, equally in European countries and North America has been in mid-Victorian periods.

Miniatures have beenusually small and oval-shaped or spherical. A few were as tiny as 40 mm by 30 mm. They were often encased in a locket or a covered ?portrait box?. In fact, the housing for the portraits was at times ornamented with components of destruction or romance such as carved initials or flowers or braided locks of hair. When employed for mourning, suitable symbolism was sometimes integrated on the reverse of the locket or frame, like mourners at a tomb. Since the type moved into Victorian periods many miniatures grew bigger (up to 150 mm by 200mm) and were painted in square or rectangular form, to be shown on walls or in cabinets. The innovative use of ivory as a ?material? was introduced by the Italian painter Rosalba Carriera in about 1700 because it supplied a luminous surface for translucent pigments like water-color. The ivory was cut from the elephant?s tusk in thin sheets lengthways, sometimes so thin as to be nearly transparent. Ivory is, nevertheless, hard to paint on with water-color, staying greasy and non-absorbent. Miniaturists therefore roughened the surface with fine sandpaper or powdered pumice stone. They as well washed-out it in natural light to make it more white. An additional technique was to degrease it with vinegar and ail, or by pressing it with a warm iron between sheets of paper. A few painters employed a brush with a single hair, and added in gum arabic to the fresh paint to make it stickier. Generally-speaking Victorian miniature portraits encompassed a brighter palette of colour, monochromic backgrounds and brushwork that exploited the semitransparency of the ivory where it was painted.

Underground oasis found below Earth's driest desert

A thriving community of micro-organisms nestles two metres below the surface of the ultra-arid Atacama desert in Chile. The discovery, made as part of a dry run for a potential robotic Mars mission, suggests microbes could find a toehold on the Red Planet ? but that rovers may have to dig deep to find them.

The Atacama desert, the most parched place on the planet, has long been considered a good Earthly analogue for Mars. The region gets rain only a few times a century, and the soil is full of salts similar to those found on the Red Planet.

Mars is even more extreme, with freezing surface temperatures and harsh ultraviolet radiation streaming in through its thin atmosphere. "On Mars, the scientific agreement is that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to find life on the surface," says Victor Parro of the Centre for Astrobiology in Madrid, Spain. "If we want to find any life on Mars, we need to go deeper."

To test an instrument called SOLID (Signs of Life Detector) that might one day hunt for subsurface Martian life, Parro and colleagues took soil samples from as far as five metres below the Atacama's surface.

SOLID searches for molecules associated with anything alive ? such as sugars, proteins, and DNA ? using 300 antibodies that bind to these molecules. When the antibody finds its target molecule, it grabs hold of it, and a special CCD camera then photographs the linked pair. Pregnancy tests, which look for a hormone associated with the early stages of pregnancy, employ a similar strategy.

Desert oasis

Parro and colleagues found bacteria, archaea, DNA, and other molecules associated with life in soil collected two metres below the surface. "This is a kind of oasis in the Atacama," Parro says.

Previously, researchers had found similar life forms within the top 30 centimetres of soil in the Atacama. Those microbes, along with the new finds, survive thanks to thin films of water that form on salt crystals in the soil. The water may have been pulled from the atmosphere, or from subsurface aquifers. "For these microbes, the most important thing is to get some water," Parro says. "If they have some water, they have everything they need to live."

Although the newly found microbes are too deeply buried to use sunlight as fuel, Parro says the soil is full of other potential fuel sources, like acetic acid and formic acid, as well as ions that could be used for respiration instead of oxygen.

Uncertain future

If Mars does have life, might it be similar to that found in the Atacama ? and therefore detectable with SOLID? Parro thinks so. "Our hypothesis is, microbes that have to deal with similar environmental problems [on Earth and on Mars] probably have to deal with similar molecular mechanisms, so they have to produce similar biological polymers or compounds," he says.

A mission-ready version of his device could be built for around $15 million, and could be part of a relatively low-budget mission, Parro says. A similar instrument, which would use 40 antibodies to search mainly for small, fossil relics of Martian life, is already planned to fly on the European Space Agency's ExoMars rover mission in 2018.

But with NASA pulling out of the ExoMars mission and the future of Mars exploration in flux, it's unclear whether the instruments will ever get off the ground.

Parro remains hopeful. "The space race is a marathon, it's a long-distance race," he says. "Let's see what happens."

The Morningside Post: Syrian Student Fundraises for Humanitarian Aid

By Michelle Chahine

"I don't think there's a quick solution ... So, at least international organizations should move more to get humanitarian aid to Syria." -- Haya Dweidary (MIA '12)

The Arab Student Association held a bake sale at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) on Thursday, February 16, led by a Syrian student, Haya Dweidary (MIA '12). They had a large variety of Syrian cuisine, donated by the expat community in New York. The lunchtime event aimed to raise money to Homs, the Syrian city that has faced a large brunt of the ongoing conflict, for families who need shelter and food.

"You know, the humanitarian situation in Syria is terrible," said Dweidary. "That's why there's been networks of Syrians abroad trying to send money and aid."

She described how other Syrians in New York, and at Columbia, are holding small events like concerts or exhibitions to raise what money they can. "We're trying to do these little things ... There are people raising money, but getting it there is the hassle."

The money raised by Thursday's event (approximately $1,000) will be sent to Homs through an informal network, starting with the National Alliance for Syrians in New York, who well send it to Dubai, where it will be sent to Damascus, and on to Homs.

"It feels really bad to be away from home. It feels really guilty," said Dweidary. "So I do what I can to help, even if it's a little bit, to feel I'm contributing."

Before the sale began, Dweidary said she didn't expect to raise too much money, but any little bit counts. "People are dying because of $2 or $3," she said. "It's really insane ... For example, you know, if you're wounded, you can't go to a hospital. You'd be killed. People are setting up clinics in their homes. So we are trying to raise money to send basic medical supplies."

She added that the last thing she wants is for her country to go into a civil war, but there seems to be no quick alternative.

"We know it's a long struggle," she said, adding: "The Russian veto was like a green light like 'go ahead and kill more people.' At least that's what we feel like. It needs to get more attention. There needs to be lobbying for the cause. We need people to do something about it ... At least, international organizations should move more to get humanitarian aid."

The United Nations General Assembly voted today to pass a resolution condemning the Syrian Regime. Though a non-binding resolution, it is the first real international effort calling on President Bashar Al-Assad to resign, and, many argue, the first step in acknowledging -- and perhaps even mobilizing aid for -- the humanitarian crisis in the country.

All genes aren't indispensable

Even with about 20 that are utterly inactivated, individuals can do just fine

Web edition : Thursday, February 16th, 2012

People don?t need a full set of working genes to lead healthy lives, a new study shows. People can dispense with at least one active copy of 100 genes and get by without about 20 genes entirely.

Many genetic diseases result from mutations or genetic variants that inactivate genes. Such variants are called loss-of-function variants and were thought to be rare. But as scientists began compiling complete genetic profiles of thousands of people, it became clear that many genes might be dispensable.

This plethora of inactivated genes may make it difficult for scientists to track down disease-causing mutations in people with genetic disorders. But the new study provides some guidelines for telling likely disease-causing variants from benign ones.?

Daniel MacArthur, while working at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Hinxton, England, and his colleagues examined complete genetic blueprints from 185 people who were part of the 1000 Genomes Project, an effort to catalog genetic diversity among people. MacArthur?s team found 1,285 gene-inactivating variants among the volunteers? DNA. Each person?s DNA carried variants that inactivate at least one of the two copies of about 100 genes, with different genes affected in each individual. On average, people of European descent have about 20 completely inactivated genes, the team reports in the Feb. 17 Science.

The researchers also found that some genes get knocked out more often than others. ?They tend to be genes that do not play a major, super-important role in our survival,? says Lluis Quintana-Murci, a population geneticist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. Many of the frequently hit genes are involved in processes such as detecting smells, or affect how blood type is determined, how muscles work or how the body metabolizes drugs. The researchers found 250 genes in which both copies were shut down in at least one person, indicating those genes aren?t essential for survival.

Previous research has found that long stretches of DNA carrying several genes can be missing from people, and a pilot study from the 1000 Genomes Project estimated that people carry many more inactivated genes. This study counts only variants that are certain to disrupt genes. Quintana-Murci says many other variants not found in this study may also shut down genes.

Easily lost genes may be on the way out, evolutionarily. In nearly 43 percent of people in the study, at least one copy of a gene called VWDE is inactive, perhaps indicating it is on its last evolutionary legs.

Most of the gene-inactivating variants were rare, found in less than 2 percent of people in the study. More than 40 of the rare variants are known to be involved in diseases such as muscular dystrophy in which both copies of the gene are inactive. People in the study carried only one inactive copy of those genes. ?

Disease-causing genes tend to have related genes in other species. The disease genes also interact with other genes in a cell more than apparently benign genes do, the researchers found. Learning these rules may aid in predicting how new mutations affect health.

The complete implementation of personnel responsibility of cell phone

Legal Perspective: The perfect mobile media management regulations, and information dissemination system to protect. While China?s existing legal management of mobile media information dissemination, such as the People?s Republic of China on Public Security Punishment Law, the Telecommunications Regulations of the People?s Republic of China, the communication network security management approach ?,? telecommunications service specifications ?, Internet audio-visual program service regulations, ?and other laws and regulations, but these regulations in the management of mobile media process, there is not targeted the drawbacks. Therefore. Must be in accordance with reality intensify the development of a targeted mobile media regulations. Many provinces and cities according to local conditions to develop a cell phone short message service regulations, to regulate the spread of cell phone text messages. The antenna length of cell phone jammer should be determined first.
However, due to significant differences around the region, the standard is not consistent, there are many problems in the implementation. At present, China has not strictly implement the cell phone real-name system management, to bring greater difficulties for the management of mobile media information pollution, but also convenient for some people to spread bad information. In June 2008, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to carry out the garbage a short remediation special action, many provinces and cities also has carried out the spam messages remediation actions. However, only by the occasional remediation action difficult to eradicate the phenomenon of mobile media information pollution. In order to more standardized management of mobile media information dissemination must be intensified to develop targeted and uniformity of laws and regulations. The complete implementation of personnel responsibility of cell phone jammer is very important.
Before the end of 2010, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and strive to the introduction of ?communications short message service management regulations?, only to develop more perfect cell phone media management regulations, in order to effectively promote the cell phone real-name system management, to provide legal basis for the management of mobile media information pollution . Technical Perspective: technological upgrading and implementation of effective monitoring. Ultra-high-speed development of mobile media and the rapid increase in cell phone technology is closely related to the pollution problems of mobile media information can also find a solution from the perspective of media technology. For example, to improve mobile media information filtering technology governance mobile media information pollution phenomenon can to a certain extent. In recent years. The antenna length of cell phone jammer has something to do with the wavelength.
China has issued a ?message filtering based on the user to set the rules of business technology requirements?, the short message filtering technology to set up rules based on user requirements and the short message filtering technology for mobile terminal refuse request ?SMS technology standards, the provisions of these standards cell phone spam filtering software system architecture, the filtering process and performance indicators, the current spam filtering specification, become an important tool to limit the spread of spam messages, and purify the content of the message. Of course, just rely on one of the few technical standards can not fundamentally solve the pollution problems of mobile media information. We believe that the current technical standards should be improved. At the same time, should also be developed in more detail, the science of mobile media information and communication technology standards, technical specifications for the governance of mobile media information pollution. The maximum radiation of the antenna of cell phone jammer can be achieved.
Audience perspective: Students audience?s sense of responsibility and media literacy, to build a harmonious and healthy mobile media and information environment. From the audience perspective, it should take the initiative to enhance the sense of responsibility and the media literacy of college students audience, efforts to build a harmonious and healthy environment. The author believes that improving the students ?sense of responsibility and media literacy, the need to proceed from the following aspects: first, to improve the students? information critical consciousness, enabling them to face the adverse information of mobile media has the ability to identify and immunity. Some scholars believe that in the new media age, is particularly important to improve the audience?s awareness of information critical. Include: to cultivate the audience?s ability to identify, accurately identify adverse information; enhance immunity. The strength adjustment of cell phone jammer can be done in the specified period.

You can feel safe in these top-rated small cars

The good news is that traffic fatalities are at historic lows, thanks in large part to increasingly sophisticated auto designs, advanced safety features and stricter seatbelt and DUI laws. The bad news is auto crashes still accounted for 32,788 deaths in 2010, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which means a vehicle-related fatality occurs an average of once every 16 minutes. Motor vehicle collisions remain the leading cause of death for individuals between the ages of three and 34.

Choosing the safest auto available is particularly important when shopping for a small car, where every advantage is essential. That?s because the laws of physics dictate that, all else being equal, a smaller and lighter vehicle will tend to fare worse in a crash than will a larger and heavier model. Buying the most massive model on a dealer?s lot is not an option for many motorists, whether they?re cash-strapped, are looking for a more fuel-efficient vehicle to save money at the pump or have modest needs and prefer to drive a smaller car. Compact and subcompact cars are on pace to outsell midsize entries for the first time in nearly two decades according to sales projections from J.D. Power and Associates.

Trying to project which of the burgeoning selection of otherwise excellent small cars on the market will do the best job of protecting its occupants in a crash ? and perhaps even help prevent a collision altogether ? is no easy task.

Forbes.com slideshow: Complete list of safest small cars

We started out by consulting the 2012 model-year list of ?Top Safety Picks? from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a non-profit organization funded by the insurance industry. These included a record 31 mid-priced and luxury small cars. ?For the second year running a record number of models qualify as Top Safety Picks,? says IIHS president Adrian Lund. ?It?s tough to win, and we commend auto manufacturers for making safety a top priority.?

To qualify, a car must garner top scores across the board for performance in front, side, rollover, and rear-end crashes based on ratings determined by the IIHS? evaluations. Vehicles are rated in each category on a basis of ?good,? ?acceptable,? ?marginal? or ?poor? performance.

For testing a car?s crashworthiness in a frontal collision, the IIHS performs ?offset barrier? tests at 40 mph, using average-size male test dummies. Here, only part of a vehicle?s front end hits a deformable barrier, which simulates the front of another vehicle. This test is said to provide a good indication of how well a vehicle?s structure will be maintained in a crash to protect its occupants, particularly against injuries to the lower extremities.

Forbes.com: Car brands offering the deepest discounts???

The IIHS? side-impact test approximates the front end of a full-size pickup truck or SUV striking the passenger?s side of a vehicle at 31 mph. The potential for injuries are measured using smaller dummies because IIHS data suggests that women are more likely than men to suffer serious head injuries in a side impact collision.

Rollover protection ratings are based on roof crush tests. To earn a ?Good? rating here, a vehicle?s roof must be able to withstand a force of four times its own weight before reaching five inches of crush depth. The IIHS estimates that such roofs reduce the risk of serious and fatal injury in single-vehicle rollovers by about 50 percent compared with those that merely meet the federal minimum requirement for crush resistance.

While deaths from rear-end crashes are relatively low they?re one of the most common causes for whiplash-type neck injuries, which result from the sudden jerking forward of an occupant?s head and torso. The IIHS simulates rear-end collisions using a combination of static measurements and active crash-dummy testing to determine how well the vehicles? seats and head rests support their occupants in a rear-end collision at 20 mph.

Forbes.com: The cars facebook?s new millionaires should buy

We further winnowed down the number of choices to the 10 models on our Safest Small Cars list by identifying the models that offer the most safety features to both help protect their occupants in a crash and help their drivers steer clear of collisions in the first place.

All cars are required to include airbags that inflate automatically and instantaneously to help protect front-seat occupants? heads and chests in a frontal crash. What?s more, all the cars in our list include both chest-protecting seat-mounted side-impact airbags for front passengers and head-protecting side-curtain airbags that extend to outboard riders in both rows of seats. Many of the models in our list further include knee-height airbags that are designed to help reduce leg injuries for front seat occupants.

Parents Against Vaccines ? Dazed Dad

Yesterday, the Ashland Daily Tidings posted an article called ?Poxsicle Parties.?

First, a little background. Ashland has the highest rate of nonvaccinated children in the state of Oregon (and has been recognized by the CDC as one of the highest in the nation). A few years ago, Frontline did a special called The Vaccine War, in which Ashland was highlighted. You can watch the clip about Ashland below (skip to 3:52), in which our pediatrician is interviewed and talks about how with a high percentage of non vaccinated children, Ashland is ripe for a potential outbreak. That?s awesome?

Back to the Ashland Daily Tidings article: it talks about parents who throw ?pox parties? when their children get chicken pox, to try and give it to other children to help build up a natural immunity to it. Here?s a section from the article:

Pox parties are advertised through word of mouth, invitation-only Facebook groups and message boards. Parents on the local email group Mamas Medicine Wheel recently offered to host and searched for someone to host a chicken pox party. At the parties, children share food or drink with a child who has the chicken pox.

One Ashland mother, who did not want to be named, said she has taken her 7-year-old son to four chicken pox parties over the past two years. At these events, she?s seen a variety of transmission methods, including shared gum, lollipops, and Popsicles.

?If he catches the chicken pox, I?d host a party for moms I know in the community,? she said. ?So far, he hasn?t caught it, but we?ll keep trying.?

Gosh, I wonder what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention think about chickenpox parties:

?Chickenpox parties? have been held to increase a child?s chance of getting chickenpox while he or she is still young. Chickenpox can be serious, especially for infants and even for some children. So, it is not worth taking the chance of exposing them to chickenpox. The best way to protect infants and children against chickenpox is to get them vaccinated.

They also linked to an article at the National Network for Immunization Information here.

Before we had Caleb, I had no idea that vaccination was such a highly-charged controversy. I had no idea that Jenny McCarthy, a former Playboy model, had become a spokesperson for the anti-vaccine movement (although, she says they aren?t truly against vaccines). And I had never heard of people having pox parties.

And I don?t get it.

I?m sure that we?ll meet folks here in Ashland who are against vaccinations, and I?m sure that people have their own well-thought-out reasons for making those decisions, but I just have a hard time understanding where they?re coming from. And if Caleb were to contract pertussis, or something else really serious, from a classmate who was not immunized, I think it?d be a little bit challenging for me to remember that I?m a pastor in the community, because it would frankly piss me off.

It just seems crazy to me that you?d want your kids to get chicken pox?kids die from it. There can be complications. And to try and get your kid to contract it at a party, swapping spit with a child who has chicken pox?that sounds kind of cruel if you ask me. In fact, when I posted about this on Facebook, some folks even went as far as to say ?child abuse comes in all forms.? I wouldn?t want to go that far, but it does seem like something that just doesn?t sound right.

Do you know people who have been to ?pox parties? before? What are your thoughts on the phenomenon?
