Sin?ad O'Connor sports grey hair and tired expression after glamorous wedding in Las Vegas

By Andrea Magrath

Last updated at 10:07 PM on 28th December 2011

She looked radiant, on top of the world and very pretty in her long strapless pink dress as she married for the fourth time in Las Vegas.

But not long after announcing that the union had come to an end after just 16 days, Sinead O'Connor emerged from her house looking tired, stressed and grey-haired.

Gone was the pretty frock and instead she came to the door in nothing but a towel before hurriedly changing into a T-shirt and jeans.

Radiant: Sinead O'Connor glowed with happiness as she married Barry Herridge in Las Vegas... but she looked much different emerging from her house not long after announcing the union had ended after just 16 days

Over before it started: Sinead was snapped at the door of her home in Bray in a bath towel, after admitting her marriage begun to unravel within three hours of the ceremony

Over before it started: Sinead was snapped at the door of her home in Bray in a bath towel, after admitting her marriage begun to unravel within three hours of the ceremony

The singer announced on Boxing Day that her 'dream' fourth marriage, to youth counsellor Barry Herridge, had ended after just 16 days.

The 45-year-old revealed on her website that the marriage was in trouble just three hours after the Las Vegas ceremony, when people close to her 38-year-old husband tried to ?kybosh? it.

But despite the brevity of the union, it could take years for the marriage to be legally dissolved, with Irish law requiring a four-year separation.

Long road ahead: Sin?a O'Connor announced the end of her 16-day marriage this week, however according to Irish law a divorce will only be granted after a four-year separation

Wedded bliss: Sin?ad announced the end of her 16-day marriage this week, however according to Irish law a divorce will only be granted after a four-year separation

Sin?ad posted a statement on her personal website stating that she had decided to end the marriage on Christmas Eve after just seven days of domesticity.

She wrote: ?There was intense pressure placed upon him by certain people in his life, not to be involved with me. These were people who had never met me but had formed opinions of me based on what they read about ?Sin?ad O?Connor? in the media, etc?.

'They must be separated for four years and only then can they apply to have the marriage dissolved'

But she admitted that her husband had also been very upset by a ?wild ride? they took to try and buy marijuana on their wedding night, as she doesn?t drink alcohol.??

?My husband was enormously wounded and very badly affected by that experience and also by the attitude of those close to him toward our marriage,? she said.

Miss O?Connor?s and Mr Herridge flew out to Las Vegas on her 45th birthday and married that day.

But despite its apparent spontaneity, the couple will now have to wait four years to legally end their brief union.

The Little White Wedding chapel confirmed to the Mail that the marriage certificate the couple signed was a legally binding contract.?

Brief: The 45-year-old singer revealed on her website that the marriage was in trouble just three hours after the Las Vegas ceremony, when people close to her 38-year-old husband tried to ?kybosh? it

According to a staff member, both Miss O?Connor and Mr Herridge were made aware of the implications of the ceremony before they tied the knot. And a spokesman from the Las Vegas church confirmed that the couple would have to take legal action to dissolve the wedding.?

She said: ?All of our ceremonies are legally binding. Occasionally, we do get couples who renew their vows. But they are the only two types of service that we do. We can?t comment on any individual weddings but all the processes are legally binding. They are made aware of that when they decide to marry with us.?

?

Marianna Fritz, a consultant with Irish Divorce Services, said the couple would be forced to wait at least four years before applying to terminate the marital contract.

?It doesn?t matter whether you get married in Las Vegas, Australia or Ireland ? the procedure is the same,? said Miss Fritz.

?It doesn?t matter whether you get married in Las Vegas, Australia or in Ireland - The procedure is the same?

?First, they must be separated for four years and only then can they apply to have the marriage dissolved and, at that point, it is relatively straightforward.?

Alternatively, Miss O?Connor and Mr Herridge could apply to have the marriage annulled ? that is, to have it declared legally void, as if it had never happened. But according to Miss Fritz this is an extremely difficult and costly procedure.

?They are entitled to apply, but with an annulment, you must use solicitors which is an extremely costly avenue. It is also very difficult, as there are only three, maybe four conditions that a court will accept. If either party is intoxicated or under the influence of any substances. Or if they can prove that they aren?t in a sane state of mind. Or if one of the parties is homosexual.

?Basically, once the couple have consummated the marriage it is not easy to have it annulled.?

Miss O?Connor was not at her seafront home in Bray, Co. Wicklow, yesterday. However, she posted a humorous message on her front door stating: ?Dearest loving hacks. This is your quote: rock?n?roll.?

The wedding to Mr Herridge was to be the fairy-tale ending to the singer?s search for love, which she launched last summer across Twitter and on The Late Late Show, even attending the annual matchmaking festival in Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare.

Then the singer shocked the nation by writing a series of candid blogs on her website, detailing what she was looking for in a man.

She wrote in September that she was in ?desperate need of a very sweet, sex-starved man,? but specified that he ?must be no younger than 44, must not be named Brian or Nigel, must be blind enough to think I?m gorgeous, has to be employed and he has to like his mother.?

Inundated with thousands of replies, Miss O?Connor selected just one man to go on a date with ? her future husband.

?Barry sent me this wonderful email, which just took my heart away. It had to be him,? said the mother of four.

Originally from Donaghmede, north Dublin, but now living in nearby Raheny, Mr Herridge revealed the contents of the email that kickstarted the relationship.

?I was getting off a train at Connolly Station one morning when I saw this woman acting strangely on the platform. At first I didn?t know what she was doing and then I realised she was playing hopscotch. It wasn?t Sin?ad but a businesswoman in a suit and in her 30s, just having a bit of fun.?

He added: ?I wondered why more women that age weren?t doing the same thing. And it struck me that this was exactly what Sin?ad was doing with her search for love, having fun, and I told Sin?ad about this woman in my first email.?

The story struck a chord with Miss O?Connor, who invited the paediatric psychotherapist out on a date last August. A coffee shop on Dublin?s South William Street was the setting for their first face-to-face meeting and it was love at first sight.

On December 7, the couple announced their intention to marry, using the Today FM Breakfast Show to get the happy news out to the nation.

The singer kept the happy news quiet when she appeared on the Ian Dempsey programme the previous day, telling him she had no gossip to share. But Barry rang the show on Wednesday morning to let the cat out of the bag.?

Dempsey wrote on his Twitter page: ?So Sin?ad O?Connor was holding back yesterday. Boyfriend Barry Herridge got back to us today to reveal that they will wed tomorrow. ?And it?s Sin?ad?s birthday tomorrow too. Congrats to them both. And Sin?ad?s new album is sounding great too.?

'Intense pressure': The singer blamed Herridge's friends for reacting negatively to their sudden union

Annulment unlikely: Divorce specialists say only three or four conditions will be accepted by a court in order to grant a costly annulment and if the marriage is consummated it is highly unlikely

But by St Stephen?s Day, the controversial singer was composing a letter to break the news of her fourth marriage?s failure ? to forestall, she said, another version leaking out.

She said she had decided to split with Mr Herridge as she couldn?t stand to see his life and career ruined through his association with her.

?It became apparent to me that if he were to stay with me he would be losing too much to bear. And that being with me was not going to serve him positively, career wise or any other wise.?

She added; ?I saw his life leave him because of how people close to him reacted. And I can?t take anyone?s life. And a woman wants to be a joy to her husband. So, you love someone? Set them free. He is a wonderful man. I love him very much. I?m sorry I?m not a more regular woman.?

She also vowed not to let her latest failed relationship get her down. ?The marriage was 16 days. We lived together for 7 days only. Until Xmas eve. And we haven?t been awful to each other. I am in a good place in life. And happy. As my good friend said ?Well, at least you got married in Vegas in a pink Cadillac! Can?t get more Rock?n?Roll than that.??

SIN?AD O'CONNOR'S RELATIONSHIP HISTORY

The course of true love has rarely run smoothly for troubled Sin?ad O?Connor, whose latest unsuccessful search for domestic bliss is at least her tenth.

In addition to four marriages, the controversial singer has been involved in three relationships that produced children, as well as, she claims, three serious affairs with women.

The Nothing Compares 2 U star first tied the knot in 1989 to her drummer and producer John Reynolds and the couple had one son together, Jake, who is now 24.

The marriage broke down in 1993 and Sin?ad next began a relationship with journalist John Waters. Their daughter, Brigidine R?is?n, was born in 1996.

In 2002, the singer married another journalist, Nicholas Sommerlad. But the couple split after just 11 months and the star vowed she would never marry again.

Her third child, Shane, whose father is folk musician Donal Lunny, was born in 2004.

In 2006, Sin?ad began a relationship with Frank Bonadio, the estranged husband of singer Mary Coughlan, that produced a son, Yeshua Francis Neil, that December. They split in early 2007 but remained friends.

Despite Sin?ad?s anti-marriage vow, she walked down the aisle for a third time in July 2010, with longtime friend and musician Steve Cooney in July 2010. However, this one also lasted less than a year and the pair went their separate ways last April.

However, the singer?s relationships have not been confined to men. In an interview with Gerry Ryan on his Ryan Confidential programme, she said she had been involved in relationships with three women.

POST-WEDDING WEED

Sin?ad O?Connor?s claim to have searched Las Vegas for ?weed? after her wedding could land her in legal bother.

The singer said some people close to her new husband had been angered ?by a bit of a wild ride I took us on looking for a bit of a smoke of weed for me wedding night as I don?t drink?.

It is believed that her reference to ?weed? was to the illegal drug cannabis, or marijuana, which Miss O?Connor has previously admitted using ?now and again?.

The purchase or possession of cannabis is an offence in Nevada, subject to a fine of up to $600 for a first offence.

But far more serious might be the repercussions for the Glenageary-born singer?s music career.
For the U.S. authorities routinely refuse travel and work visas to those who have committed ?crimes of moral turpitude?.

These crimes include ?a violation (or conspiracy or attempt to violate) any law or regulations of a State, the United States or a foreign country relating to a controlled substance.?

In 1992, Miss O?Connor appeared to advocate marijuana smoking and in a 1999 Irish Times interview, she admitted to smoking ?weed?, saying: ?I do not take drugs ? I smoke a little weed now and again, which I told the social workers and they laughed.

?I do not take drink or any other drugs. Everybody knows that.?

N.C. State coach endures ups and downs in 2011

--?

Tom O'Brien, an-older-than-"old school" football coach and former Marine major, doesn't speak without thinking first.

So when O'Brien said after N.C. State's 37-13 win over Clemson on Nov. 19, a victory as unexpected as it was thorough: "I really have no explanation for what just happened," he wasn't trying to be glib.

It was that kind of difficult-to-put-into-words season for the 63-year-old coach and his fifth Wolfpack team.

Earlier this week, with the clarity afforded by time, linebacker Audie Cole provided an explanation - for the Clemson win, the 2011 season and perhaps the last five years of Wolfpack football - an explanation that escaped his austere coach after the Clemson game. "We lost some games that we shouldn't have," said Cole, a fifth-year senior who was in O'Brien's first recruiting class, "and we kind of got away with some wins that maybe we shouldn't have. It goes both ways."

A season that started with the controversial exit of popular quarterback Russell Wilson, and a 2-3 record, ended with five Wolfpack wins in the final seven regular-season games.

The season ends with the Pack's third bowl trip in four years on Dec. 27 to play Louisville in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte. Significant injuries, for the fourth time in O'Brien's five seasons, threatened to derail the season.

"The list (of problems) is too long right now," O'Brien said after a 44-14 loss on nationial television at Cincinnati.

Which is why, three months later - after the fifth straight win over North Carolina, the upset of Clemson and the bowl-clinching win over Maryland, O'Brien commends his players for what they were able to accomplish in 2011.

"It was as difficult of a season as any as I've been around," said O'Brien, who has been a head coach for 15 years and an assistant for another 22. "It ended up being the most rewarding. The players came back and fought to get back to a bowl game. That was one of their main goals when the season started and they did it."

'This isn't easy'

Tom O'Brien won 75 games in 10 seasons at Boston College. He was hired by N.C. State after the 2006 season to do the same: build a consistent winner without compromising his integrity or the school's academic reputation.

His final eight teams at BC went to a bowl, with the last seven winning their bowl game, including a rare win by a visiting team at Boise State in 2005. The players and recruits O'Brien left behind at BC, led by star quarterback Matt Ryan, went on to win the ACC's Atlantic Division in 2007 and '08.

O'Brien has compiled a 32-30 overall record in five seasons, with an 18-22 ACC mark, at N.C. State. O'Brien wants to win more, and expects to win more - even after inheriting a 3-9 team from Chuck Amato in the winter of 2006 -- but injuries and inconsistencies have slowed the program's momentum.

That fact does not escape O'Brien or Wolfpack athletic director Debbie Yow.

"This isn't easy," said O'Brien, who was 31-27 in his first five years at BC. "It's hard to win football games."

He's heard it all

O'Brien's contract, worth about $1.5 million a year, runs through the 2015 season, an extension he signed in July 2009 with former athletic director Lee Fowler, the AD who hired him.

The four full years remaining of the contract didn't slow any speculation about O'Brien's future in the second half of the 2011 season. Every week became a referendum on O'Brien, who was criticized by some for the public split with Wilson, who led Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl this season. Criticism is an occupational hazard for a coach, one that O'Brien understands fully and doesn't let bother him.

"I had a plebe year (at the Naval Academy)," O'Brien said. "There isn't anything that hasn't already been said or done to me."

Wilson's exit dominated the topic of conversation in early part of the season, as Wilson had the Badgers off to a 5-0 start and State languished at 2-3.

O'Brien wanted Wilson to participate in spring practice. Wilson, a fourth-round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies in 2009, wanted to play baseball and then come back in August, as he did before the 2010 season.

Chuck Boss: Rebecca Romijn's Sexy-Scary Character Was Supposed to Be a Man (omg!)

Chuck is sending in Rebecca Romijn to do a man's job.

"We created a character originally that was just going to be a man, sort of an ominous, scary figure who has a penchant for torture, which he considers his art form," co-creator Chris Fedak says of the former supermodel's guest role on Friday's episode (8/7c, NBC), "Chuck Versus the Curse." "But then we started thinking about it, we were like, 'What if Rebecca Romijn was this guy? That would be scary and sexy.'"

From Chuck to Hawaii Five-0: TV's sexiest crime fighters

The reconceived spy, named Robyn Cunnings, will give Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) trouble as they're trying to eliminate a harmful computer virus. Romijn is no stranger to filling deadly roles (Mystique in X-Men) or even characters with a male past (the transgendered Alexis Meade on Ugly Betty).

"She was game for [the role] and also has got a wicked sense of humor," Fedak says.

Meanwhile, new parents Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and Awesome (Ryan McPartlin) take some time for themselves with a date night, which naturally means that a babysitter for Clara is in order. Don't worry, fans ? it's not Jeffster! "Mom and Dad [Awesome] are babysitting," Fedak says. "We don't do a lot of baby in peril... yet."

The Year in Rewind: The worst of 2011

But this is Chuck, so no date night will remain romantic or calm for long. "Ryan McPartlin and Sarah Lancaster are getting drawn into the action," Fedak revealed. "They're very much the center of that episode. Watching Sarah Lancaster out in the field is great. She and Ryan are sexy, fun and exciting together."

Hmm, that sounds a bit like a Mr. & Mrs. Smith scenario, no? Lancaster has expressed interest in having Ellie pick up a gun. "Well, she doesn't blow anybody away," Fedak teases. "But I wonder if that might have changed after having a baby?"

Check out this preview of Ellie and Awesome's night of intrigue:

Chuck airs on Fridays at 8/7c on NBC.

RIM activist renews call for leadership change (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Research In Motion faced renewed calls for a change in its leadership on Thursday, hours ahead of the quarterly results that could fuel criticism over the BlackBerry maker's poor performance and sagging share price.

Jaguar Financial, an activist shareholder that has asked the BlackBerry maker to sell itself in whole or parts, once again called on two of RIM's independent directors to push for a separation of the roles of chairman and chief executive.

For months, Jaguar and other dissident shareholders have pushed for the replacement of Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, who share both top roles. The two are RIM's largest shareholders and the most powerful figures in its management.

"It strains credibility to believe that a CEO requires the title of chairman to sell RIM products but the RIM directors have apparently bought into this unconvincing rationale," said Jaguar, which has claimed support of investors that hold about 8 percent of the stock.

Shareholder discontent with RIM centers around its poor performance in the face of stiff competition from Apple Inc's iPhone and iPad, and devices powered by Google's Android system. The BlackBerry's market share has been steadily eroding, while the PlayBook, RIM's late entry in the tablet market, has generated anemic sales.

The latest call for change comes ahead of RIM's third-quarter results announcement, due after the close of regular trading hours.

RIM has already warned the market that it will take a big hit on its unsold PlayBooks in this quarter and that it will ship fewer smartphones in the current quarter than in the third quarter, which just ended. The warning has pushed RIM's share price to its lowest since 2004.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Graph on RIM's 2012 EPS http://link.reuters.com/tyn55s

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"At this point we believe investors have lost faith in the ability of the RIM management team to carry out a proper game plan to restore value," said Jaguar CEO Vic Alboini in a statement.

"Jaguar believes that the road map to value restoration lies in a sale of RIM whether as a whole or in separate parts."

The group called on RIM to sell its handset business and monetize its patent portfolio, while retaining its service business under new leadership.

Jaguar argues that RIM has lost its ability to compete in the consumer hardware segment. A sale or spin-off of the business would help restore value to shareholders, it says.

Jaguar, which invests in underperforming and undervalued companies, sees RIM's service business as RIM's most valuable business given its recurring revenue and high margins.

In its statement, Jaguar called on two of RIM's independent directors, Barbara Stymiest and Roger Martin, to initiate some drastic changes in governance at the beleaguered smartphone maker.

Stymiest, a former chief operating officer at Royal Bank of Canada, also served as TSX Group's chief executive. Martin is the dean at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

"They should step up and take the lead in making dramatic governance change or else resign from the board if they are unable or unwilling to initiate appropriate governance changes," Jaguar said in a statement.

Shares of RIM, which closed at $15.08 on the Nasdaq on Wednesday, were down 12 cents at $14.97 in early trading on Thursday. Its Toronto-listed shares were down 21 Canadian cents at C$15.48.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Ah, Paris. City of Light. Land of romance. Gobbler of all the best Golden Globe nominations.

Presented by overseas reporters based in Hollywood, the Globes may be a worldwide affair, but this time, they have a real French flair. The silent film "The Artist," from French filmmaker Michel Havanavicius, led with six nominations Thursday, while the field includes Woody Allen's French romance "Midnight in Paris" and Martin Scorsese's Paris adventure "Hugo."

Steven Spielberg has two nominees with French connections: the World War I epic "War Horse," set partly in France's countryside, and the animated tale "The Adventures of Tintin," based on comic-book stories created in France's neighbor, Belgium.

"Of course, the foreign press is going to like France," joked Seth Rogen, producer and co-star of the cancer tale "50/50," which has two nominations and no obvious French links.

"War Horse" and "Hugo" are up for best drama, along with two George Clooney films, the Hawaiian family story "The Descendants" and the political thriller "The Ides of March"; the 1960s racial saga "The Help"; and Brad Pitt's baseball tale "Moneyball."

"The Artist," ''50/50" and "Midnight in Paris" are competing for the Globes' other best-picture prize ? for a musical or comedy. Also nominated are Kristen Wiig's wedding romp, "Bridesmaids," and Michelle Williams' Marilyn Monroe tale, "My Week with Marilyn."

The Globes help narrow down prospects for the Academy Awards, whose nominations come out Jan. 24. If "The Artist" earns a best-picture nomination then, it will be the first silent movie with a serious shot at Hollywood's top prize since the first year of the Oscars, for 1927-28, when the silent flicks "Wings" and "Sunset" took top honors.

"It's really strange and rare to not hear anything in the theater," said "The Artist" star Jean Dujardin, a dramatic actor nominee for his role as a silent-era superstar whose career capsizes after talking pictures take over in the late 1920s. "It's a new visual and emotional experience for people."

Frenchman Dujardin won the best-actor prize at May's Cannes Film Festival in southern France, where "The Artist" premiered.

Though it has virtually no spoken dialogue, "The Artist" is anything but quiet. The film features clever sound effects and a gorgeous musical score that earned a Globe nomination for French composer Ludovic Bource.

Hazanavicius received directing and screenplay nominations for "The Artist," which also picked up a supporting-actress honor for his wife, Berenice Bejo, who plays a rising star of the sound era.

While the key talent on "The Artist" is French, the film was shot in Hollywood and offers a classy re-creation of the world's film capital in the 1920s and '30s. The supporting cast includes John Goodman, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller and Missi Pyle.

The French connection this year comes heavily from U.S. filmmakers telling stories set in France. Scorsese earned a directing nomination for "Hugo," about an orphan boy living in a Paris train station, where he becomes caught up in a mystery surrounding French film trailblazer Georges Melies. Allen also made the directing cut for "Midnight in Paris," his first film shot entirely in France, the romantic fantasy following an American writer (Owen Wilson) whose nostalgia for the 1920s Paris of Hemingway and Fitzgerald leads him on time-bending adventures.

With a cast that includes French actresses Marion Cotillard and Lea Seydoux and France's first lady, Carla Bruni, "Midnight in Paris" became Allen's biggest hit in decades.

Scorsese also turned nostalgic, crafting a dazzling 3-D Paris of the 1930s and recreating memorable moments from Melies' fantastical silent-film shorts, including "A Trip to the Moon."

"It gave me a chance to work in 3-D, which I've wanted to do since I was young; it allowed me to make a child's adventure, the type of picture that I loved when I was young; and it provided an occasion to pay tribute to one of the cinema's greatest pioneers, Georges Melies," Scorsese said.

Spielberg's "War Horse" follows a resilient steed changing hands among the British, Germans and French during World War I, and his "Adventures of Tintin" chronicles the treasure-seeking exploits of Belgian artist and writer Herge's comic-book hero.

To stretch the Franco angle further, Hollywood exile Roman Polanski, who lives in France after fleeing the United States amid charges he had sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977, shot his Globe-nominated drama "Carnage" outside of Paris. The film, based on a stage work by French playwright Yasmina Reza, earned musical or comedy actress nominations for Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet as mothers squabbling over their sons' schoolyard fight.

"The Help" and "The Descendants," which tied for second-place behind "The Artist" with five Globe nominations each, are pure American stories.

Adapted from Kathryn Stockett's best-seller, "The Help" earned a dramatic actress honor for Viola Davis and a supporting-actress nomination for Octavia Spencer as Mississippi maids going public with stories about their white employers as the civil-rights movement heats up in the 1960s.

"I'm thrilled for Viola," Spencer said. "I consider myself a rank-and-file actor who's been kicking the can around for 15 years. Viola is a trained Julliard actress who has been doing stage, and now the world is getting to see what she can do."

Co-star Jessica Chastain also had a supporting-actress nomination as Spencer's good-hearted, lonely boss.

"The Descendants" earned a dramatic actor nomination for Clooney as a father struggling to tend his daughters after a boating accident puts his wife in a coma. Shailene Woodley earned a supporting-actress honor as Clooney's troublesome older daughter, while filmmaker Alexander Payne had directing and screenplay nominations.

Multi-tasker Clooney has three nominations. He's also up for directing and screenplay for "The Ides of March." For the acting prize, Clooney will compete against his "Ides" co-star Ryan Gosling, who plays a presidential candidate's aide. Gosling had a second nomination for best musical or comedy actor as a ladies man in the romance "Crazy, Stupid, Love."

Glenn Close also is a dual contender, for best dramatic actress as a woman masquerading as a male butler in the Irish drama "Albert Nobbs" and for best song for writing the lyrics to "Lay Your Head Down," the film's theme tune.

"What an astounding embarrassment of riches," Close said.

Joining Close and Davis in the dramatic actress lineup are: Rooney Mara as a traumatized victim-turned-avenger in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"; Meryl Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady"; and Tilda Swinton as a grieving woman coping with her son's terrible deeds in "We Need to Talk About Kevin."

Clooney has another pal in the dramatic actor race, his "Ocean's Eleven" franchise co-star Pitt, who's nominated for his "Moneyball" role as Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane.

Gosling, Clooney and Pitt are up against Leonardo DiCaprio as FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover in "J. Edgar" and Michael Fassbender as a sex addict in "Shame."

Pitt's romantic partner, Angelina Jolie, picked up a nomination for foreign-language film for her directing debut, the Bosnian war drama "In the Land of Blood and Honey."

With drinks and dinner, the Globes are a laid-back affair for Hollywood's elite compared to the Oscars. The show turned a bit prickly last year as host Ricky Gervais repeatedly made sharp wisecracks about stars and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of about 85 overseas reporters that presents the Globes.

But Gervais helped give the show a TV ratings boost, and he's been invited back as host for a third-straight year.

"The Artist" star Dujardin joked that Gervais must follow the silent-film code if he plans on mocking him, saying "he has to do it silent, without any words."

Health scare rocks Leah on 'Teen Mom 2'

MTV

Leah Messer fears for the health of one of her twins on "Teen Mom 2."

By Drusilla Moorhouse, E! Online

Just like Jenelle and her friends, Tuesday night's episode of "Teen Mom 2" took a detour from Planet Fun.

Chelsea is changing her Facebook status to "in a dysfunctional relationship," Kailyn's "living like trash," while Jenelle and bad-boy boyfriend Kieffer are living?in her car. But it's Leah who has her very own suite in the heartbreak hotel, as she and hubby Corey cope with potentially devastating news about baby daughter Ali....

LAST WEEK'S RECAP: "Teen Mom 2" recap: Halloween horror nights!

Chelsea and Adam 4EVAH: Shocker! After messaging her on Facebook (presumably not addressing her as a "fat stretch-mark b----" and calling their daughter a "mistake" as he did in past texts), Chelsea agrees once again to get back together with her baby daddy. Anyone with a GED knows that Chelsea's plan to "use her head, not her heart" was inherently flawed. As "sad" as it makes her, a heart is all this girl's got.

And maybe reuniting with the lazy man is best; he's sure to help out with baby Aubree while Chelsea recovers from her knee surgery and hits the books. As she points out, "With all the distractions I haven't been studying at all for my GED." And if Adam again refuses to pay rent to Chelsea's enabling/"mean" father, well, maybe he's just saving for their future: "In 10 years ... when we get married." Wait, what?! Guess it's time to toast the happy couple with a cup of spit-soaked sunflower shells.

MORE: So true? So false? Does "Teen Mom's" Amber Portwood really earn six figures?!

Unwanted houseguest: Since she left baby daddy Jo and moved out of his family's house, Kailyn has been living with her mom ? and her Bartleby the Scrivener boyfriend. Returning to their home (sometime in between her two jobs and full-time college classes), Kailyn finds a note from Mr. Tidy: "Your rooms stink," he writes. "We don't live like ? me and your mom don't live like trash." That's all the invitation Kailyn needs to finally strike out on her own, and after rejecting welfare, she finds her own apartment, apparently financed by a nonprofit organization that helps young moms.

MTV, who are you trying to fool here? Amber Portwood admitted in court that she received $280,000 for a year of filming "Teen Mom." Are we supposed to believe the "Teen Mom 2" cast is working for free?

MORE: "Teen Mom's" Jenelle ? Is she really back with slacker boyfriend?

"Dude, I seriously did not just drive all the way the (bleep) up here for everybody to be (bleeping bleep) pants": Since Jenelle's mom and hater of true love kicked her daughter out, the "Teen Mom" has been bunking with BF Kieffer in her car. And despite those sweet Ed Hardy seatcovers, things aren't going so well for the two lovebirds. While Jenelle tries to do her homework in the library, Kieffer uses his free time to gamble. He's got to do something besides "stare at the wall."

Jenelle's resentment of the poster boy for failure explodes when he brings a bottle of liquor to drink before their bowling night at Planet Fun. Just when their friend Ben is trying to bizzout, Jenelle and Kieffer have a huge fight in the parking lot. "That was my change jar, Jenelle! What the hell would you do that for?" shrieks Ben after she chucks his coins at her boyfriend ? who retaliates by shoving her and throwing her in the car. Cue MTV's domestic violence PSA, and next week's previews showing Jenelle pressing charges against Kieffer for assault.

Baby Blues: Leah has to take a day off from her new job as a dental assistant to take baby Ali, who's been suffering from an undiagnosed developmental disorder, to the eye doctor for a checkup. Although the ophthalmologist has some good news ? Ali's adorable pink glasses seem to have corrected her nystagmus ? he recommends a brain MRI because her small optic nerves could indicate a brain abnormality.

When Leah is discussing the scary news with hubby Corey and his stepmom, Joetta, Ali's twin Aleeah takes her first steps while her sister ? who has only just learned how to sit up by herself ? watches. That's when Joetta drops another bombshell: She did some research and discovered that it is not uncommon for patients with Ali's diagnosis to go blind.

If anyone deserves a night at Planet Fun, it's this family.

Exclusive: Made in Texas: Apple's A5 iPhone chip (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Apple Inc is famous for relying on low-cost Asian manufacturers to both source and assemble its popular gadgets, but the consumer device giant recently started receiving a critical component in its iPad and iPhones from closer to home - Texas.

The A5 processor - the brain in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 - is now made in a sprawling 1.6 million square feet factory in Austin owned by Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics, according to people familiar with the operation.

One of the few major components to be sourced from within the United States, the A5 processor is built by Samsung in a newly constructed $3.6 billion non-memory chip production line that reached full production in early December.

Nearly all of the output of the non-memory chip production from the factory - which is the size of about nine football fields - is dedicated to producing Apple chips, one of the people said. Samsung also produces NAND flash memory chips in Austin.

The South Korean giant began supplying the A5 processors to Apple this year from the Austin plant, the people said.

Apple declined to comment, saying it does not detail supplier relationships. A Samsung spokeswoman declined to comment on its customers and the specification of the chips made in its Austin plant.

But she said the company expanded the Austin factory to include a production line to make logic chips. The A5 is one such chip.

The powerful A5 processor, which uses technology licensed from Britain's ARM Holdings, is designed by Apple in California.

The A5 chip debuted in Apple's iPad 2 in March and now also powers the new iPhone 4S. The 120 square millimeter chip is twice as fast as its predecessor, the A4, which is also made by Samsung, according to reports from teardown firms that have taken Apple's devices apart.

TEXAS APPLE

Apart from Austin, Samsung has only one other non-memory logic chip factory, in South Korea.

Apple relies on its main contract manufacturer for gadgets, Foxconn, to assemble them, mainly in its factories in China and Taiwan.

The roaring success of both the iPad and iPhone has helped the city of Austin, where Freescale Semiconductor is based and other chip companies, like ARM, Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, also have operations.

Semiconductor companies are attracted to Austin because of a steady supply of educated employees from the University of Texas' engineering school.

Samsung has added about 1,100 jobs to support the new non-memory chip production in the factory, which produces 40,000 silicon wafers every month, a Samsung spokeswoman said.

The rest of Samsung's total 2,400 employees in Austin work in its NAND flash memory factory by the logic chip factory, she added.

The Korean company, which began the U.S. plant in 1996 to make its NAND flash memory chips, continues to produce them there in addition to the A5.

Samsung's factory is the largest foreign investment in Texas with a total investment of about $9 billion, according to Austin Chamber of Commerce.

Austin is also home to an Apple customer call center that deals with customer complaints in North America, Apple's biggest market. The Cupertino company employs thousands in that facility, who deal with calls ranging from complaints to support.

While Apple is one of Samsung's largest customers, both are arch-rivals in the smartphone and tablet marketplace. The two companies are also locked in an acrimonious patent infringement battle that spans multiple countries and products.

Gaming Iowa Expectations

December 13, 2011

John Ellis says that Newt Gingrich will ultimately under-perform expectations in Iowa "because he does not have a substantial statewide organization" and "he doesn't have any money to buy telemarketing services."

However, Ron Paul "has a substantial field organization and so is likely to somewhat over-perform in the actual balloting."

The key for Mitt Romney "is for Paul to out-perform and for Gingrich to under-perform. This sets up a press narrative of the Gingrich souffle. The Newtster rose and then he fell. The normal laws of political gravity apply. Unstated conclusion: Gingrich is doomed. This is exactly the narrative that Romney needs going into New Hampshire."
